Making Green by Going Green:
Driving Engagement & Retention

BHI and Caribou Coffee conducted research that revealed employees who admire and value a company's green initiatives are more engaged and less likely to turnover. Caribou's environmentally friendly efforts, from how they source their coffee beans to creating energy efficient store designs, is a major driver in their employees' perception of the company and their engagement. This evidence is based on 4 years of employee survey data that BHI and Caribou have reviewed. Some of the specific findings from the most recent employee survey are:

• Employees with strong "green" attitudes are significantly more likely to be engaged (80% engaged) than employees with weak "green" attitudes (62% engaged)

• 80% of employees with strong "green" attitudes desire to stay employed with Caribou compared to 59% of employees with weak "green" attitudes

• If Caribou's workforce was comprised of employees with strong green attitudes, they would be retaining an additional 830 employees

• Estimating an average cost per hire of $3,500 for hourly workers, Caribou Coffee (or a company of similar size) could save $2,905,000 by retaining those 830 employees.
